Heptominoes

Heptominoes Jean-Claude Constantin has taken the packing puzzle to the extreme with the Heptominoes puzzle. Besides the staggering number of pieces, the solution also involves pieces rotated at a 45 degree angle to the frame. In case the challenge of putting all of the pieces into one 14-inch (36-cm) frame isn’t enough, an additional smaller frame is included into which any 7 pieces can be packed. Made using a large amount of laser-cut wood by Jean-Claude Constantin. Jean-Claude Constantin lives in Germany, where he designs and manufactures many different wood and metal puzzles, as well as magic tricks and other intellectual toys and games.

Trying to see how pieces fit and re-assessing where they might go when they don’t fit is a good exercise in checking and re-evaluating choices. Each piece can only go in to one place so there is none of the compromising and trading-off that takes place in so many other aspects of modern life. This forces the player to constantly re-evaluate their decisions, and teaches patience with the process as it is an integral part of the game.
