Also known as “The Manacle” and “The Ball and Chain”, as marketed by Pentangle in 1972 and 1974 respectively. Winner of the London Design Centre Award in the 1970’s. Eureka

Eureka

Eureka This is one of our original wood puzzles that we began producing over fifteen years ago. It still proves to be one our better selling wood puzzles.

Trying to see how the pieces fit and re-assessing where they can go if they do not fit is a good exercise to check and re-evaluate the choices. Each piece can only come in one place, so there is no compromise and negotiation that takes place in so many other aspects of modern life. This forces the player to continually re-evaluate his decisions and learns to be patient with the process because it is an integral part of the game.

Tower of Hanoi

Tower of Hanoi

Tower of Hanoi The game called the Towers of Hanoi was invented by the French mathematician Edouard Lucas in 1883 and since then it has been both a popular puzzle and a well-known mathematical problem that is an excellent illustration of the general concept of recursion. This puzzle is known by most mathematicians and a very large number of people who like either puzzles or elementary mathematical problems. The problem is that you have to move the wooden circles from one to another without placing a larger piece on a smaller piece. Sounds easy enough until you try it.

The simplicity of the puzzles is misleading. Although the concept is quite simple – finding the pieces and repairing them together – an amazing level of mental activity is required to complete the necessary steps to complete a puzzle. Psychological studies have identified a number of thought processes that are necessary to achieve what is in fact a complex process of identifying shapes and images and relating them to a general pattern. More importantly, solving puzzles is great work for the brain and can have therapeutic benefits.
