Penny Packer 16

Penny Packer 16

Penny Packer 16 Based on the popularity of the 10 Penny Puzzle, Creative Crafthouse did some research to find a more challenging penny packing model. This is it….. your goal is to put 16 pennies (mint pennies provided with puzzle) into the quadrant sized opening.   There is one unique solution and the pennies will just fit.   They use 74.7% of the available area.  Good luck finding it quickly… 20 minutes would be an excellent solution time. Base is cut from floorboard for durability, water and scratch resistance and to give it a nice weight and feel.  Top section is birch ply.  Solution is provided with the puzzle. The simplicity of jigsaw puzzles is deceptive. While the concept is very straightforward – find the pieces and fix them together – there is a surprising level of mental activity required to carry out the steps needed to complete a puzzle. Psychological studies have identified a number of thought processes that are required to undertake what is in fact a complex process of identifying shapes and images and relating them to an overall pattern. More importantly, solving jigsaw puzzles is a great work out for the brain and can actually have therapeutic benefits.

Puzzle Booklet – Greek to Latin Cross

Puzzle Booklet - Greek to Latin Cross

Puzzle Booklet – Greek to Latin Cross These booklets are produced in Hungary by hand in limited editions; their contents are made of laser cut wood. The Greek to Latin Cross has two challenges:  Fill the Latin Cross shaped hole.  Fit all the pieces into the “smaller” Greek cross. Is it possible? Paradoxically it is. The Hungarian mathematician Farkas Bolyai proved that any two polygons with the same area can be dissected into each other.  This puzzle beautifully shows an extension of this theorem.  Here, three polygons are dissected into each other. Cleverly designed with an attractively innovative book cover.  Solution is included. Made by Péter Gál.

Crossroads

Crossroads

Crossroads A fun and clever puzzle.  You should find it fairly easy to manipulate the balls to the center positions as there are some depressed landing areas there, but the outside may be more of a challenge…. whatever way you tilt the puzzle seems to cause at least one of the balls to move away from the outside….hmmmm, such a problem. But, there is a very elegant and quick solution that involves using a scientific principal.  Can you find it? Measures 3” square x .7” thick.  Material is rugged and attractive floorboard with clear acrylic cover.    Made by Creative Crafthouse in the USA.

The first thing you see when looking at any puzzle is the photo or illustration of the completed puzzle. On choosing, remember that the image should have some educational value but also be something the child can relate to. If the image is familiar to the child or fulfills the educational objective (like learning colours or naming objects), the experience of completing the puzzle will be all the more enjoyable, satisfying and productive. The image should be easily recognizable so the child can identify it as something they see around them in their everyday life. It should also have distinguishable features to help them decide where to put the piece so that it ends up in the right place.
