Trying to see how pieces fit and re-assessing where they might go when they don’t fit is a good exercise in checking and re-evaluating choices. Each piece can only go in to one place so there is none of the compromising and trading-off that takes place in so many other aspects of modern life. This forces the player to constantly re-evaluate their decisions, and teaches patience with the process as it is an integral part of the game.

The first thing you see when looking at any puzzle is the photo or illustration of the completed puzzle. On choosing, remember that the image should have some educational value but also be something the child can relate to. If the image is familiar to the child or fulfills the educational objective (like learning colours or naming objects), the experience of completing the puzzle will be all the more enjoyable, satisfying and productive. The image should be easily recognizable so the child can identify it as something they see around them in their everyday life. It should also have distinguishable features to help them decide where to put the piece so that it ends up in the right place.

Viking Box – Invisible

Viking Box - Invisible

Viking Box – Invisible The Viking Box is a combination of maze and sequential puzzle. To open it, you must solve the maze puzzle on the top of the box. It makes a great money maze puzzle gift holder. You can put a gift of cash, jewelry or a gift card inside and then the recipient has to solve the puzzle to get it out! To solve the puzzle, you must manipulate the combination of turning wheels, metal balls and sliding pieces. The Viking Box Puzzle is a difficult puzzle for the truly dedicated puzzler. This “invisible” version is different than the original because it has a wooden plate that covers the mechanisms on the top of the puzzle, giving you only a glimpse of the wheels and balls through the curved slots.  The sides of the box are made of wood, but the bottom is made of clear acrylic. Jean-Claude Constantin lives in Germany, where he designs and manufactures many different wood and metal puzzles, as well as magic tricks and other intellectual toys and games.

The simplicity of the puzzles is misleading. Although the concept is quite simple – finding the pieces and repairing them together – an amazing level of mental activity is required to complete the necessary steps to complete a puzzle. Psychological studies have identified a number of thought processes that are necessary to achieve what is in fact a complex process of identifying shapes and images and relating them to a general pattern. More importantly, solving puzzles is great work for the brain and can have therapeutic benefits.
