Puzzle Booklet – Octet in F

Puzzle Booklet - Octet in F

Puzzle Booklet – Octet in F These booklets are produced in Hungary by hand in limited editions; their contents are made of laser cut wood. The objective is to fit the two types of pentominoes and hexominoes in the big parallelogram shaped frame.  Quintet in F is a similar puzzle that contains only 5 pieces, but it is al least as challenging as this one. Cleverly designed with an attractively innovative book cover.  Solution is included. Made by Péter Gál.  Original design by Stewart Coffin.

The simplicity of jigsaw puzzles is deceptive. While the concept is very straightforward – find the pieces and fix them together – there is a surprising level of mental activity required to carry out the steps needed to complete a puzzle. Psychological studies have identified a number of thought processes that are required to undertake what is in fact a complex process of identifying shapes and images and relating them to an overall pattern. More importantly, solving jigsaw puzzles is a great work out for the brain and can actually have therapeutic benefits.

Sacred Space – Large Piece

Sacred Space - Large Piece

Sacred Space – Large Piece AUTHENTIC INDIGENOUS ART! Pieces in this 500 piece puzzle are larger so they are easy to work with for all puzzlers in the family. Betty Albert-Licenz was adopted and raised by French Canadian parents in Northern Ontario. She spent time on Vancouver Island where both of her interests in art and spirituality surfaced. During the next twenty years, she worked with pen and ink, and improved her artistic techniques. Circumstances eventually brought her back to her Native American father, discovering her birthright as a Cree. Betty then began an art business with her father called “Wabimeguil Art Studio,” which distributes art throughout North America. Like many Cree people, dreams play an important part of her life and her work. She discovered that her dream people were faceless and this is evident in some of her work. Her art allows the viewer to experience tradition, action, and a deep spirituality. Her use of vibrant acrylic colors begs us to view creation in a new way. Through her painting, “Wabimeguil (White Feather),” she expresses not only her own growth in spirituality, but also encourages people to experience “The Peace,” that she represents in her art. Part of the Indigenous Collection.500 Larger-sized Pieces Finished size: Approx. 24.6 in x 19.5 in / 62.5 cm x 49.6 cm Art by: Betty Albert

Trying to see how pieces fit and re-assessing where they might go when they don’t fit is a good exercise in checking and re-evaluating choices. Each piece can only go in to one place so there is none of the compromising and trading-off that takes place in so many other aspects of modern life. This forces the player to constantly re-evaluate their decisions, and teaches patience with the process as it is an integral part of the game.

Mindanao

Mindanao

Mindanao Designed by Rex Rossano Perez, this a sequential discovery puzzle in which the tools required to solve it are found within the puzzle itself.   This is his latest creation and the goal is to find the star.  As with his other puzzles, the name plays with an aspect of his home country – Mindanao is a group of islands that are also known as the Southern Phillipines.  Note that there is some small parts, so please solve the puzzle on a wide table and well-lit place. Unscrewing the nuts is a big NO. The screws hold the puzzle together. Made in black & white acrylic, its unpretentious appearance adds to its natural appeal.  A delightful new addition to the line of Rex’s puzzle works!

The first thing you see when looking at any puzzle is the photo or illustration of the completed puzzle. On choosing, remember that the image should have some educational value but also be something the child can relate to. If the image is familiar to the child or fulfills the educational objective (like learning colours or naming objects), the experience of completing the puzzle will be all the more enjoyable, satisfying and productive. The image should be easily recognizable so the child can identify it as something they see around them in their everyday life. It should also have distinguishable features to help them decide where to put the piece so that it ends up in the right place.
